A majestic ceremony at jam-packed Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai witnessed the Indian team honored for winning the ICC World Twenty20.
The players got gifted with cheques worth Rs 80 lakh ($200,000) each, while the the coaches and support staff were presented Rs 15 lakh ($38,000) each.
The ceremony came at the end of a nearly five-hour-long ride on an open-top double-decker bus from Sahara international airport. Traffic was brought to a standstill on the route, approximately 20 kilometres long, with crowds lining the roadsides.
The journey was made amid tight security, with police outriders leading the motorcade.
Even a steady downpour could not dampen the spirits of players or the public as the team was first greeted by Sharad Pawar, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Vilasrao Deshmukh, the chief minister of Maharashtra and other top brass of the BCCI and the state government.
