The match referee for the India- Sri Lanka series, Hurst, explained in a statement the futility of holding a match in the fifth ODI at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi despite the protests of the Sri Lankans, "The decision to abandon the match was taken by myself, in consultation with the on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Shavir Tarapore, and both captains as it was clear that the pitch had extremely variable bounce and was too dangerous for further play. Before abandoning the match, consideration was given to shifting the match to a secondary pitch. However, it was deemed impractical as the secondary pitch was not adequately prepared."

The ICC Vice President and NCP leader, Sharad Pawar, has slammed the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) by stating that the need was to prepare a good pitch and cricket ground, and that it was not about building a "fancy" stadium.
