Ricky Ponting had more headaches before the Ashes in England. There is the matter of the World Twenty20 and Australia have suffered a massive defeat in the Group of Death.

Ricky Ponting is not delighted at the prospect of spending two weeks in Leicester should his team fail to win against Sri Lanka (and hence, the group being termed the group of death). The reason his fears have surmounted is because Australia capitulated to a wind called Chris Gayle in their opening match of the tournament.
Apart from David Warner’s sizeable contribution of sixty-three runs from fifty-three balls, all Australia had to show for themselves were smaller partnerships between the likes of David and Mike Hussey and Brad Haddin to reach a score of 169, the trio of Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards and Dwayne Bravo halting Australia after first leaving them reeling at three for two.
That was however blown to smithereens with such efficiency by the West Indian captain that there could have only been one winner in the match. Openers Gayle and Andre Fletcher built a virtually impassable partnership, a stand of 133, that saw Australian shoulders drooping. While Fletcher made fifty-three from thirty balls, he was overshadowed by his skipper in his usual belligerent mood. Gayle’s eighty-eight runs from just fifty balls meant the West Indies chased Australia’s total emphatically in just about sixteen overs.
The Group of Death now means that Australia must win against Sri Lanka for any hope of making it to the Super Eights.
