ICC World Twenty20: Pakistan Make Short Work of Netherlands

After losing lackadaisically to England, Pakistan needed to win by a huge margin to seal a place in the Super Eights of the ICC World Twenty20. Thankfully for their fans, their team rose to the challenge.

The Netherlands would not have otherwise commanded so much respect. But because they had beaten England so convincing in the first match, Pakistan had to be extra wary of the hungrier team pushing for a place in the Super Eights. Pakistan’s pressure mounted significantly and they needed permutations and combinations even in victory to see them through.

But Pakistan went the orthodox way, included Sohail Tanvir and opened the batting with Kamran Akmal who provided the impetus with his forty-one. There was stronger performances from the middle order, this time from Shoaib Mallik, captain Younis Khan and Misbah-ul Haq to a formidable total of 175 at Lord’s.

Apart from Alexei Kervezee, the Dutch team struggled to string partnerships together. This was because of the superior quality of Pakistan in terms of presenting another conundrum to the experienced Dutch – the introduction of spin. Between Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal, the duo chalked up seven wickets and left the Dutch batting line up feeble. The end was expected as the lowly ranked team lost by eighty-two runs. But that they stirred up matters certainly made for an interesting group B match nevertheless.
