ICC World Twenty20: Sri Lanka See Past Gayle-Hit Windies

Sri Lanka rode high on individual performance in their inconsequential group match against the West Indies in the ICC World Twenty20 after having jointly starred in eliminating Australia.

Sri Lanka’s grand old man, Sanath Jayasuriya, turned on the heat and keeping him company was the other dashing opener, Tillkeratne Dilshan, though perhaps not in the same league as the stalwart. Together they damaged the West Indian psyche, already wounded in the absence of captain Chris Gayle who sat out of the match with a knee injury.

While Jayasuriya made a bludgeoning eighty-one from forty-seven, Dilshan struck for seventy-four in the same number of deliveries. Little came thereafter but Sri Lanka were already put in a strong position by the 124 run opening stand. Even as Lionel Simmons picked up four wickets, the West Indies were guilty of bowling bread and butter deliveries for the Sri Lankans and ended up paying the price as Sri Lanka notched an innings total of 192.

West Indies missed the blitzkrieg of Gayle that blew Australia out of the Group of Death equation. In fact it was not until Dwayne Bravo’s fifty that the West Indies really stirred up matters even though Simmons and Ramnaresh Sarwan also got amongst the runs. Once again Ajantha Mendis was working his spin as did Lasith Malinga with his tennis ball action. West Indies were left needing twenty-eight runs off the final over and lost expectedly by fifteen runs.
