Their performance defied their fears. A severely injury hit New Zealand managed to turn up red hot on the field against the hapless Ireland in the first Super Eights encounter.

Group F saw Ireland take on New Zealand. While Ireland would not have been taking too much confidence into the match after the shelling they received against India, New Zealand had an injury list that almost played out like another playing eleven.
Jesse Ryder was the latest to be ruled out and it made way for Aaron Redmond who was clearly the match winner by a distance. Opening with the stand in captain Brendon McCullum as Daniel Vettori continued to nurse his shoulder, Redmond took the attack to the Ireland who began badly and simply let matters get from bad to worse.
Redmond’s sixty-five runs from just thirty balls set New Zealand up for a strong total and with Martin Guptill and Scott Styris putting up strong performances with the bat, Ireland knew they would have to chase down a plausibly insurmountable total.
New Zealand did not quite reach the 200 mark but they still left Ireland chasing a daunting 199 for victory, despite Alex Cusack and Kyle McCallan picking up two wickets apiece. Ireland’s forte lay only in the hands of Gary Wilson, Andre Botha and to an extent in Cusack. But the moments lay only far and fleeting to really impact the game after Kyle Mills struck early. Nathan McCullum enjoyed the proceedings as he picked up three wickets in a chase that had been rather one sided from the very beginning.
New Zealand won the match comfortably by eighty-three as once again Ireland found themselves bowled out without seventeen full overs being bowled. Ireland will certainly have to find their miracle and hope some of the other teams slip up if they are to make something of themselves and take themselves beyond this stage of the ICC World Twenty20 in England.
