It was another forgettable performance that New Zealand did not want, and could not afford, at this stage. As it turned out, their loss gave them no chance of qualifying for the semi finals of the ICC World Twenty20 and it could not stop Sri Lanka from sailing through.

New Zealand collapsed badly in their Super Eights match against Pakistan and but for Martin Guptill and Aaron Redmond today, the story would have been no more different today. After being a respectable sixty-four for two, with Redmond stinging Sanath Jayasuriya with a dose of his own medicine, and Martin Guptill making forty-three, New Zealand collapsed when the challenge was all but over with Ross Taylor stumped off Ajantha Mendis and Scott Styris comprehensively bowled. Making only 110 runs and losing the match by forty-eight runs did not make for them a convincing case of making it to the semi final.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka banked on the combined form of opener Tillekeratne Dilshan, former captain Mahela Jayawardene, and captain Kumar Sangakkara. While Dilshan missed his half century by two runs, Mahela’s forty-one and Sangakkara’s thirty-five, fortified Sri Lanka’s cause as they set New Zealand a target of 159, too much as Daniel Vettori and New Zealand found out.
