ICL Back Peddles on Deal, Sets Conditions

Just when it became apparent that New Zealand could be enhancing its team with star players, the ICL has attached a rider, while stating that it is not cash strapped.

Many cricketers associated with the ICL have alleged that they have not been paid their dues for over six months now and are therefore unaware of their status with the league that cancelled its March April commitments.

But the ICL has come out to state that it is not financially depressed as some have claimed and that those players whose payments have been delayed are up for a performance appraisal after which they will get their dues.

Since a couple of days, it has been floating around that New Zealand could be bolstered by the likes of Shane Bond and Daryll Tuffey as ICL offered to renege on the contracts of players who wished to play international cricket for their country. Pakistan cricketers such as Abdur Razzaq have also claimed they are free of their ICL commitments.

But the ICL has apparently only temporarily agreed to cut the deal so that these players will once again become available when the league is set to see the second edition of the bi yearly tournament. With this new clarification, it remains to be seen whether boards would be willing to accept this kind of an arrangement and more importantly if the ICC, under pressure from the BCCI, would be willing to allow such a situation.

Kapil Dev has gone on record to quote that unlike other organizations (read the BCCI), the ICL would not prevent their players from playing cricket for their national teams.

In the meantime the ICL has issued a fresh statement that it was seeking recognition from the ICC after its talks with the BCCI failed and would be willing to take the battle to court if the meeting in Dubai on April 17th fails.

The ICL may have been temporarily suspended. But it appears the headache has not quite gone away as the ICC would have liked.
