ICL’s Success: Dhaka Warriors in Line for SF Berth if Badshahs Slip

When the ICL announced its new team, the Dhaka Warriors, it made one country very angry and with good reason. As ICL heads towards the knock out stage of the tournament in its second season, the team from Bangladesh will be hoping that a few things do go wrong for the other teams as they want to line up for the semi finals. Talk about instant, fast food like success!

By beating the Mumbai Champs comprehensively, the Hyderabad Heroes were fortunate not to have to rely on their final league game to qualify for the semi finals. In the end, it was a dress rehearsal for a potential meet in the semi final or final between another team that qualified for the semi final stage, Royal Bengal Tigers and Hyderabad Heroes. While Nicky Boje changed the fate of the game against the Champs, the Heroes enjoyed the pressure free atmosphere against a strong Tigers team that crumbled under the Shahabuddin attack.

But there was an unlikely fairy tale in store for Super Sunday. For Dhaka to qualify for the semi finals in the first year in the ICL, the Lahore Badshahs who beat them two days ago would have to lose against the top team of the tournament, Chennai Superstars and the Ahmedabad Rockets would have to beat the most controversial team of the tournament, Chandigarh Lions. Even then, it would perhaps come down to a situation where run rates would perhaps decide the final spot in the semi final stage with the three decided by the Superstars, Heroes, and Tigers.

While last year saw Hyderabad warming up to the ICL more than it did for the IPL, but facing problems at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, another young team of the tournament, the Ahmedabad Rockets, will see the tournament’s finals being played out at home. Unfortunately while cricket lovers have embraced the ICL in Ahmedabad, there will be no chance of seeing their heroes in action; it will be other “Heroes” who bring their game to this city.
