Kochi saw traditional sports fans abandon football interests for a day to witness a highly anticipated one day match, the first in fact of the India Australia ODI series. The huge spectator turnout has to be appreciated because there are several Indian cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar missing in the line up and Ricky Ponting himself rested for the series.

However, the fans had to return home disappointed despite queuing up since the early hours of the morning because of rain over the weekend that had cast a doubt on the match itself. With a brief let up by the rain Gods, hope rose only to be quickly dismissed as more rain meant more water on the ground, on the covers and the outfield, making it impossible for the ground staff to drain off the water in time for the match, even with a time delay.

Eventually the early start to the match turned into a non starter as the match was abandoned, leaving God's own country in misery over the plight of the weather.
