Ind Aus T2 Days 1 & 2: North-Paine Ton Partnership Trouble India; Sachin Hits 14,000 Runs

India once again stand perilously on the edge, not wanting to look down because they still have a foot and then some at stumps on the second day of the second Test of the India Australia series at Bengaluru.

Australia relived Mohali moments as once again Shane Watson and Simon Katich gave them a tremendous start in the first session of the match at ninety-nine for none before Australia suffered a wobble.

Watson managed to cross past the half century mark but the Australian captain, Ricky Ponting, was not throwing in the towel almost standing still with till the end of the first day with Marcus North. Ponting's seventy-seven left the match dramatically poised at 285 for five at stumps on the first day.

But what troubled India even more on the second day was the long, agonizing partnership between North and wicket keeper, Tim Paine, who not only salvaged Australia from a dicey situation but put then in a strong position by the time the innings end.

How important the partnership was can be gauged by how quickly the wickets fell once the partnership was broken. North went onto make his fifth Test century and a valuable one in the context of the series where India is one up while Paine made fifty-nine runs of his own. Australia finished up on 478 at tea on the second day, India's spinners featuring prominently in the wickets column with Harbhajan Singh picking up four to Pragyan Ojha's three.

India soon found themselves in trouble after a few harried run opportunities and as the Australian bowlers adopted a more hostile bowling approach. Virender Sehwag did not like being hit on the helmet by Ben Hilfenhaus and chose to use the next ball to smash a six only to be caught by the waiting Mitchell Johnson on the boundary ropes. Rahul Dravid went softly to Johnson with a very wide delivery that he nicked to the slips.

From two from thirty-eight, India were rescued by Murali Vijay, drafted in for the injured Gautam Gambhir, and Sachin Tendulkar who defied the proceedings by occupying the crease and using the odd loose ball to good use. While Vijay was unbeaten on forty-two while Tendulkar was batting on forty-four while also crossing the 14000 Test run mark as India ended up on 128 for two at stumps.
