The stand-in Indian captain's half century apart, India had little going for them at the end of the first day's play, apart from Sachin Tendulkar. As he helped tide over an embarrassing situation, India will go into day four attempting to make a deeper inroad towards doing what they should have done from the start - dominant Bangladesh into submission in the first Test at Chittagong.

Virender Sehwag's half century apart, the Indian line up was ripped apart by the combined efforts of Shahadat Hossein and Bangladesh captain, Shakib Al Hasan, who each picked up five wickets.
The only thing that kept going for India was the bat of Sachin Tendulkar, at times holding up the innings at one end while at the same time, scoring valuable runs to get India to a position of respectability.
En route, Sachin reached the 13000 Test runs mark and also, completed his 44th Test hundred, a phenomenal performance by any stretch of the imagination but such a timely one when one did not think India would be stretched as much as they were after Sehwag was demeaning of the Bangladesh team.
Bangladesh did suffer the hiccups, losing three wickets on the second day before bad light was becoming another integral member of the Test. Mushfiqur Rahim (forty-four runs) and Mahmudullah (sixty-nine runs) brought Bangladesh within one run of India's first innings total of 243, although it appeared that while their partnership was in flow, India would be embarrassed further with the hosts taking a lead.

But India looked steadier a second time round, reaching 122/1, leading by 123 runs even though they lost their skipper for forty-five even as Gautam Gambhir stood firmly unbeaten on forty-seven with two days to go.
