IPL 4 Match 69: Royal Challengers Go to Top of the IPL 4 Table with Win over Chennai

One thing that could be said about both the teams in a dress rehearsal for the IPL 4 playoff is that both teams could have been operating on a one man army theory. That is because while Mahendra Singh Dhoni stood like a rock against the backdrop of a weathered Chennai Super Kings, Chris Gayle has become synonymous with victory for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Group effort from the Royal Challengers Bangalore bowlers and a pulsating innings from Gayle, the replacement player, ensured that the Royal Challengers Bangalore kept up their winning record and landed on top of the IPL 4 points table tally.

For Chennai, playing away from home, it is a dismal batting performance compounded by serious minded, diligent bowling from the RCB bowlers. With the return of the RCB captain, Daniel Vettori, the team bolstered their bowling attack with his world class spin to go perfectly hand in hand with the pace bowling of Zaheer Khan and Sreenath Arvind. Between the trio, the Chennai Super Kings played out an innings they would not like to revisit again anytime soon.

The challenge seemed well past them at four down for twenty-two in only the sixth over. Dhoni and Saha tried for forty-two runs to stem the rot. However, Dhoni was left as the last man standing to strive for some respectability, his seventy runs off only forty balls in defiance as the Chennai Super Kings managed to score just 128 runs in Bengaluru.

In contrast, the Chennai Super Kings bowlers struggled to stand tall against the might of Gayle. Chris Gayle has been the rejuvenation the RCB team needed in the tournament and yet again, he showed why he is reckoned as a dangerous opener. His seventy-five runs from fifty balls included as many as six sixes as it became clear that the Royal Challengers Bangalore had certainly come in hungrier for the win than the IPL 3 winners had.

With Virat Kohli chipping in with thirty runs, the Royal Challengers Bangalore won the match comfortably to get to the top spot in the table.
