The South African camp would have been tempted to go with Johan Botha, who has captained South Africa in recent times in the ODIs when Smith has been unavailable, but decided to go with the experience of Jacques Kallis.
Although Smith played in the second Test of the India South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, the fracture in the bone of his little finger apparently needs at least ten more days to recover, ruling him out of the ODI series, no doubt with South Africa looking at long term prospects.
One way or another, Hashim Amla has finally received what many believe should have come long ago. Amla will now replace Smith in the ODI line up. Amla has been in spectacular form on this tour to India, contrary to many of his team mates.
