Gary Kirsten has been advocating a more healthy balance between Twenty20 explosion and the retention of Test cricket. But he also thinks Andrew Flintoff’s retirement may not be an isolated case.

Michael Vaughan and Flintoff have already announced their retirement. Steve Harmison is expected to do so at the end of the Ashes. While the other two do not have lucrative IPL contracts to fall back on yet, Flintoff is the leading money maker alongside Kevin Pietersen and needless to say, his earnings will go up once he makes himself available for the IPL full time now that he will not Test duty for England.
But the Indian coach and former South African batsman thinks more could be going the way of Andrew Flintoff because for cricketers, especially injury prone ones like Flintoff, it would mean having to bowl four overs instead of 25-30 in a Test match and also get paid multiple times that a central contract with a board would provide.
While Kirsten has urged Indian cricketers to look beyond the lure of the IPL and get their priorities straight, he fears that financial security may ultimately be the deciding factor for the modern day cricketer.
