The late South African has been declared as lined up for posthumous honours even as the world remains divided over Hansie Cronje after the match fixing scandal that rocked cricket eleven years ago.

Hansie Cronje has been named as one of the few South Africans being awarded for their work in uplifting the cause and putting South Africa on the map. The Minister for Arts and Culture in South Africa will hand over the award to a member of Cronje's family in light of the demise of the former South African captain in 2002 in a controversially tragic plane crash that also buried further insight into the match fixing saga that sent cricket to the dark ages.

Hansie Cronje was considered the bright prodigy to take over the South African captaincy from Kepler Wessels and indeed South Africa's record improved by leaps and bounds by a captain whose reputation only rose in the eyes of those in cricket circles. Cronje was also identified by Sachin Tendulkar as one of the most difficult bowlers he has faced even though Cronje was more of a thinking bowler than an outright fast bowler.

However, with the Indian police unearthing Cronje's hand amongst those dirtied by bookies and match fixing, South African cricket came crashing down as did the faith in the integrity of the game. The following King Commission inquiry saw Cronje confess and break down in the full gravity of his deeds. Although several other players were implicated, the haze has never lifted to fully reveal the truth.

Cronje lived out a tumultuous two years away from the spotlight as the people conflicted over whether Cronje should be revered over the transformation he brought in South Africa's image as a successful captain or spite him and erase his memory as someone who had brought cricket to its knees.

It appears that even as Cronje has named, that conundrum continues in light of the Siyabakhumbula Tribute Awards. Undoubtedly there will be a few things to say by a few people, and not all in gratitude even as the focus as been on remembering people for their goodness and relevant contributions and not their misdeeds.
