If Geoff Lawson is to be believed, the former Australian pacer has landed the job of Pakistan’s new cricket coach, a post lying vacant since Englishman Bob Woolmer was murdered in his Kingston hotel room during in the World Cup in the West Indies.
It was a two-horse race between Lawson and fellow Australian Dav Whatmore. Lawson told Aussie TV and radio channels that he has bagged the high-profile job and if that’s correct, it would be heart-breaking for Whatmore.
A highly successful coach who guided Sri Lanka to World Cup glory in 1996 and did a wonderful job with Bangladesh, Whatmore was seen as favourite to succeed Greg Chappell as Team India coach before things went haywire. BCCI did not invite him even for the interview and Whatmore had his hopes pinned on Pakistan. But even that hope seems dashed with Lawson pocketing the job.
When he takes up Pakistan’s reins, this would be first international assignment for Lawson who has coached New South Wales after a successful international career, which saw him scalping 180 wickets in 46 Test matches.
