Mallik’s Sacking Did Not Meet with Everyone’s Approval

Shoaib Mallik was dethroned from the captain’s position and Younis Khan was appointed captain of the Pakistan cricket team. But former players were against the move.

Mallik’s axing would not have happened had it gone the way of the chief selector Abdul Qadir. Qadir opposed the dismissal of Mallik from the point of view that the loss to Sri Lanka alone could not form the basis of such a hasty decision.

But Ijaz Butt, the chairman of the PCB, was in favour of a change as was manager Yawar Saeed. Even coach Intikhab Alam, who replaced Geoff Lawson who was fired earlier, thought Pakistan would fare better under a new and more able captain.

Javed Miandad though was not happy with the captaincy change. While he did not doubt Younis Khan’s abilities, what he did doubt was the timing with which the change was effected and felt it unfair on Mallik to be judged purely on the heavy defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka. Sending back Mallik like this would only create a negative image and with Sri Lanka set to come back to Pakistan for the Test series, Miandad wondered what kind of action as precedent would follow if Pakistan fared poorly there as well.

But Miandad himself has found takers for his role which is still under a pending decision by the PCB. Try convincing Miandad that the earlier contract as director general was right too.
