Manish Pandey is paying the price for thinking he could be Saurabh Tiwary, never mind the fact that he is the IPL’s first century marker.

The IPL governing council has decided that the young Pandey is deserving of a four match ban in the IPL 4 season although he will still be playing for the Sahara Pune Warriors, the IPL franchisee that he has wanted to play for.

Pandey’s case draws some parallels with Ravindra Jadeja who was banned from the IPL 3 season for negotiating outside his contract with the Rajasthan Royals.

The IPL governing council has stipulated the rules that uncapped players with more than two years of domestic cricket under their belt but less than five years should not receive salary over and above Rs.20 lakhs. Although Pandey was bought in the IPL auctions by the Mumbai Indians in the first season, he played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the next two seasons where he performed outstandingly for them.

Unfortunately for Pandey, while the Indian selectors failed to back him by playing in even one international match for India, which left him in that slot that could not participate in the IPL auctions and thereby, lost out on prize money that would have accrued to him for being one of the most promising youngsters on offer at the moment. While the likes of Saurabh Tiwary and Umesh Yadav walked away with cool money at the IPL 4 salaries, Pandey was apparently caught in a fix.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore were clearly displeased with the fact that the youngster was negotiating through his agent to fetch him a better deal than the Rs.20 lakhs on offer by the RCB who wanted him back in the fold. Instead Pandey was looking to the Sahara Pune Warriors and although he will play for them in IPL 4, he will miss four matches as also a part of his pay as penalty for the agent haggling the IPL franchisees.

The issue still begs the question: if the IPL governing council allowed foreign domestic cricketers to participate in the auctions, why were the Indian domestic cricketers denied this opportunity?
