Damien Martyn has openly stated that it was Shane Warne's initiative that had him vying for a slot in the IPL 3 auctions, eventually being bought by the Rajasthan Royals for IPL 3.

Warne's association as captain and coach of the Rajasthan Royals was the speculation over how thirty-eight year old Martyn found favour with the team for the IPL 3.
Martyn, who retired from Australian cricket in 2006-'07, had previously played as captain of the Ahmedabad Rockets in the Indian Cricket League (ICL). But sensing his opportunities with the IPL, Martyn then sought out Warne who helped him get his paperwork in order, and brought him to the table without a firm assurance that he would play alongside Warne.
As it turned out, Martyn found no takers and was comfortably snapped up by an elated Shilpa Shetty who was more than happy to please her captain with the player he had marked. Adam Voges also walked into the team without opposition.
