He would have been the oldest debutant for Australia. Now he can only watch helplessly from the sidelines. The dream was over even before it began.

Not since Bob Holland in 1984-'95 would Australia have chosen to use someone with the age reading thirty-six and counting. But Bryce McGain was considered Australia's best spinner to test the Indians on home conditions. As it turns out, his dream debut will remain just that, a dream.

McGain's shoulder injury, speculated to have sustained during a match against India A and aggravated in training ahead of the four day tour match against Board President's XI, has ruled him out of the series.

Instead Cameron White will now fill in for the leg spinner's absence after having impressed the selectors in the series against India A even as captain. This decision overrides speculation that Beau Casson would finally get his chance after being overlooked for the India tour. Jason Krezja, the off spinner, is expected to now lead the spin options for Australia. Andrew Symonds' part time options load will now be perhaps taken up by Michael Clarke. But only time will tell which bowler comes out unscathed. Shane Warne would know.
