Nothing in Pakistan cricket should surprise anyone. On the same token, Misbah ul Haq's appointment as Pakistan's Test captain for the Pakistan South Africa series should not shock despite the fact that Misbah was not in the squad for the previous series.

Misbah was part of the tour of the controversial England Pakistan series. Yet he has been handed the reins after Shahid Afridi announced his announcement from Test cricket and Salman Butt has been suspended on allegations of spot fixing after assuming leadership.
Shahid Afridi has been named the ODI and Twenty20 captain while Misbah's appointment has been met with shock reactions from former cricketers who cannot justify the selection of the batsman who expressed frustration at being left out for the ICC World Twenty20 2010.
However, Mohsin Khan, the chief selector, stated that although they preferred Younis Khan, the latter has been stuck in a deadlock with the board and there was no other "clean senior in the team" to lead the team. Stating that Misbah was one of the fittest players, professional who is capable of striking form, at thirty-six, Mohsin stated they felt he was the best choice given the circumstances.
