Modi Denies IPL in Financial Trouble from Investors as Dasgupta and Sony Part Ways

Lalit Modi held what can be described as an emergency press conference to deny overwhelming reports in the media claiming the IPL was seeing too many pull outs from sponsors and a potential fall out in the television rights.

Modi was forced to take questions to not only quell the growing media scrutiny in the IPL’s ‘fund raising’ schemes but also, negate any doubts in the mind of present and future sponsors about the fate of the IPL.

The intensity of interest grew after Sony’s main man, Kunal Dasgupta, tendered his resignation which many feel may have been instigated rather than him tendering it in after being Sony’s longstanding CEO. The haranguing within Sony was apparently over Reliance’s Big TV who made the initial investment for in stadium advertising while Sony was allegedly negotiating with Airtel for on air advertisements while blocking rival advertisements at a much lower cost.

While Indian newspapers are reporting of extensive sponsor pull outs such as Citigroup and HDIL, Modi has gone on record telling people at the press conference that not only have the original sponsors from the first year stayed on but that he was in a position to question if they wanted to leave because there were more sponsors this year vying for slots at a higher bid despite the recession!

One wonders though if that has succeeded in convincing the vultures though!
