Modi Must Learn: Money Won't Buy You Fans

There was a poignant story on the podium of the opening ceremony of the IPL 2 in Cape Town, South Africa, if Lalit Modi (and all of India's politicians) were alert enough to learn.

Lalit Modi shouted himself hoarse, hailing all and sundry in South Africa and touting his own horn about how the IPL 2 was organized in such a short period of time. Of course, he had every right to do a bit of both. But somehow it failed to find resonance or applause with Indian audiences back home of the kind his speech evoked in India last year.

Modi even announced huge pay cheques for local South African schools to promote education and development, all for a worthy cause we'd say.

But one look back at the announcement of the dignatries on the podium and it was amazing how effortlessly the Mayor of Cape Town (a lady, mind you)won the natural applause of the audience while everyone else's efforts seemed strained, at least a little.
