Attacking indirectly to England coach Duncan Fletcher, the yesteryears all-rounder Ian Botham has highly applauded the left-arm spinner Monty Panesar.
Panesar is the answer to England’s quest for a match-winning spinner. Therefore, he should not be asked to show all-rounding performance.
In his column in the Daily Mirror, the former all-rounder wrote,
It’s time to stop patronizing Monty Panesar about the need to improve his batting or fielding and accept him for what he is — the match-winning spinner we’ve craved for years.
He sharply criticized the national coach Duncan Fletcher for underestimating Panesar who achieved five wickets hauls twice in the second test against Pakistan at Old Trafford.
However, Duncan Fletcher was restrained in his praise of Monty’s performance, recycling his view that international cricketers need to be multi-dimensional, Botham writes.
