Murali Records 500; Pakistan a Humiliating Defeat

Sri Lanka had many reasons to celebrate on Saturday. Not only did Muttiah Muralitharan record 500 wickets in one day internationals, but Sri Lanka also led a rout by 234 runs against Pakistan who had no answer on a day of Sri Lankan brilliance.

When Umar Gul scores the highest number of runs, twenty seven to be precise, it usually means Pakistan are in trouble. And they were and in no small measure.

Tillkeratne Dilshan knocked Pakistan back with a century and useful contributions from all the batsman including Kumar Sangakkara who scored a half century. It was a tall order chasing 310 in the final ODI after the three match series was tied at 1-1.

But what followed after Pakistan poor bowling and fielding that outpoured generosity to the Sri Lankans already in a free vein was beyond belief. Pakistan found themselves in a shock parade back to the pavilion as Kulasekara and Thilan Thushara rocked the Pakistan batting with three wickets apiece to leave the hosts reeling at six down for twenty-two with all the top batsmen back in the pavilion except skipper Shoaib Mallik who cut the lone, sorry figure in the middle.

While Pakistan appeared lead footed, it was impeccable line and length bowling from the frontline bowlers that ensured Pakistan were only going to one way – down. This would be no small defeat and the loss, one that would rankle on the psyche in the sheer manner of the carnage that kept building in the Paksitan dressing room.

When Sohail Khan was bowled, Sri Lanka had an additional reason to celebrate because Muralitharan picked up his 500th wicket and now stands just two shy of Wasim Akram for the all time highest wicket takers in one day internationals.
