Perhaps murky waters do run deep. That is what the ICC is trying to establish as the hearing has also revealed that Salman Butt may indeed be in more trouble than previously assumed.

The ICC anti corruption tribunal deferred the announcement of the verdict into the spot fixing allegations against the three suspended Pakistan cricketers until February. But amidst this announcement came the disclosure that the then Pakistan captain will have to explain his role in another Test on the same Pakistan’s tour of England.

Salman Butt does not have the Lord’s Test alone to contend with. He is apparently under the ICC radar for the Test prior to it as well. According to the ICC, Butt has not been cleared of investigations into the Oval Test, which appear to have been done without necessarily letting the public in on the information. Although the ICC have refused to divulge the details of the investigation, it would appear that Butt would find himself in considerably more trouble than his other two fellow Pakistan cricketers, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer, simply because he happened to be the Pakistan captain on that occasion.

While Butt has maintained his innocence all through the ordeal, Mazhar Majeed, the player agent who was the crux of the sting operation, referred to Butt as the ring leader, thereby implicating the then Pakistan captain. The ICC is plausibly taking more into consideration than just the ramblings of Majeed in the matter, unbeknownst to the public eye.
