How did Bob Woolmer die? Was it a natural death? Or was he murdered? Such questions have been lingering in everybody’s mind since the death of the late Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer. But, even after about two months since he died, speculations are galore into the mystery behind his death.

After having said, that they have substantial evidence that the coach was killed, Jamaican police have eaten its own words. Now they believe he died of heart failure brought on by chronic ill health and possibly diabetes. Such astounding twist follows an extensive review of the evidence led by a senior Scotland Yard murder squad detective.

The death of the coach sent shock waves around world of cricket, and cast a shadow over the Cricket World Cup and the Pakistani side, which Woolmer coached.

The 58-year-old Woolmer was found dead on March 18 in his suite at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica, just a few hours after Pakistan crashed to a shock defeat against minnows Ireland in the World Cup. Soon thereafter, Mark Shields, former Scotland Yard detective who is No 2 in the Jamaican force, astonished everyone by announcing explicitly that he was 100% sure that Mr Woolmer had died from asphyxiation after being throttled in his hotel room.

Speculations were high that Woolmer might have been the victim of match-fixing mafia, because of his vast knowledge in that regard. While few thought that a feverish Pakistan fan who couldn’t digest the exit of his side from the World Cup killed him.

Also, there were some extraordinary claims that he was poisoned with aconite or was fed snake venom.

The stunning U-turn by the investigating team comes following the report by a senior Home Office pathologist, Dr Nat Carey, who dismissed the strangulation theory. Therefore, the Jamaican police have reached to the conclusion that Woolmer died naturally, and the revelation will be made public shortly in Kingston.

This sudden change of track in investigation and official releases by the police add to the mystery surrounding the death of Bob Woolmer. Long gestation period of the investigation and report exposes aired by various media broadcasts point finger to behind the scene maneuvers and pressure on the investigating agencies. The truth may not come to the public as contradictions are appearing in the statements by the police.
