No Good Can Come of IPL for the young Australian Cricketers...Point to Note: World Cup

This was one of the interesting observations revealed by an esteemed cricket columnist who is certainly echoing something not dissimilar to what Javed Miandad had to say of the IPL's association with Australian cricketers just a few days before.

Noted cricket columnist, Peter Roebuck, was reflecting on the announcement of Australia's ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 squad when he made the comment that the domestic Indian Twenty20 tournament was proving detrimental to the young Australian cricketers.

Suggesting that the Australian squad comprised of old timers who were giving it their final effort to win the trophy for the fourth time in a row and fifth overall in the tournament, Roebuck also took pains to point out that the likes of David Warner were missing out on opportunities that may a direct result of letting their technique slack through playing Twenty20 leagues such as the IPL.

He also makes reference to the lure of money and extension of cricket by making a reference such as 'IPL and other places of ill repute.' He is rather candid about players being swayed by the sums of money on offer, not to mention the accompanying glitz and the pitfalls that came with it.

Essentially what Roebuck is suggesting is not new in that previous references have been made about how the IPL holds within it the temptation to succumb without seeing the larger picture, he is also of the opinion that the IPL attracts young, impressionable minds as well as aged cricketers who would have otherwise called sunset on their cricket careers.

The mushrooming of these leagues, and particularly the extravaganza that is the IPL, has drawn a great deal of interest as well as criticism because while it has provided a new avenue for cricketers to make money, it has not really answered the question of whether it can really nurture the talent on offer.

What Roebuck is saying of the Australian cricketers is on the lines of what former Pakistan batsman, Javed Miandad, attributed as the reason for the downfall of Australia generally and particularly in Test cricket after losing the Ashes to England in Australia.

At the moment, the Australian cricketers are not winning any popularity contests and it would seem that the rather large hold of Australians in the IPL has also become a glaring plausible reason for why they find themselves where they do in public opinion despite still being ranked the no.1 ODI team in the World going into the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
