ODI 2 Full Time: NZ Scrap Marginally Better than Aus to Clinch Game

If the Australians failed miserably to post a target, the New Zealand Black Caps did only marginally better overhauling the target. While some would call it a nail biter in the end, really the New Zealand batting left a lot of to be desired for the most part of the innings.

It depends on what one would call entertainment. If the match is laid low for forty overs only to spring alive in the final ten, does it then constitute edge of the seat action? The debate was certainly on after New Zealand won the first match of the Chappell Hadlee Trophy by two wickets on the final ball of their innings.

Losing wickets of Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill and Peter Fulton early within fourteen overs for just twenty-five on board did not help. The innings virtually came to a grinding halt after that as runs came at a premium, New Zealand had no momentum going for them and Australia were more than happy to apply the squeeze.

Just when it appeared New Zealand had lost the plot on how to successfully chase and win a one day international, Ross Taylor, Neil Broom and Kyle Mills, who picked up four wickets earlier, injected the needed impetus to just get New Zealand across the boundary line.

Taylor’s innings of sixty-four was the glue that held New Zealand and the plan together and Broom’s twenty-nine and Mills’ twenty-six were worth their weight in gold. Even with the impetus, New Zealand squandered mini advantages towards the end to end up a tight a run a ball battle.

Taylor’s breakthrough was another step in the door for Australia but Broom kept things alive while Mills refused to give in after a stupendous bowling performance. Controversy dogged Broom’s dismissal but to New Zealand’s credit, they kept their wits about them and a situation made heavy weather out of, they managed to sneak in a victory when they should have really buried Australia.
