ODI 2 Half Time: India Lose Way After Yuvraj-Raina Alliance

India will consider their batting in the second one day international against Sri Lanka in Colombo a bit of a mixed bag, leaving the hosts with an enticing, juicy carrot to chase.

Once again the early loss of Sachin Tendulkar tested India’s young guns. But once again, there was support in good measure. The forty-nine partnership between Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir meant that India were going great guns within the first ten overs. But Gambhir’s dismissal meant Sehwag had to consolidate with Yuvraj Singh.

The biggest build up of the innings from the eighty-five run partnership between Yuvraj and Suresh Raina. Yuvraj would be disappointed not to make more of his sixty-six and so will a few more Indian cricketers be ruing.

But once again the fall of wickets threatened to derail the Indians who were still pretty at over 150 after thirty overs. Sri Lanka gained greater control of their bowling after the initial overs when Sehwag and Gambhir were in slog mode. Ferveez Maharoof and the spinners, Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan, restricted the runs as the Indians perhaps left the batting power play too late in the end when they 'ran out' of run making wickets and ended up not utilizing it to the full. Too many batsmen getting starts but not capitalizing on it, became the predominant story of the Indian innings.

It was the lower order partnership of thirty-three between Zaheer Khan and Praveen Kumar that saved India more blushes. 256 may not seem bad, but that India could have easily made something in the reach of 300 is something they could rue if Sri Lanka put on the skates.
