On Air Spat Between Srinath and Atapattu as Pitch Debate Hots Up

Former Indian fast bowler and now match referee, Javagal Srinath, got into a tiff with the former Sri Lankan batsman and captain, Marvan Atapattu about the pitch incident that led to the fifth ODI being finally abandoned.

Srinath and Atapattu got into a heated debate after the match was stopped during the twenty-fourth over over unfit pitch conditions. While Atapattu was adamant that the match should have been called off even earlier as both, Tillekeratne Dilshan and Sanath Jaysuriya, had sustained injuries early.

But the diplomatic Srinath who is now a match referee spoke like one when he stated that being hit was not just because of the pitch and that all batsmen go through tough situations even on good pitches. He further added that the uneven bounce of the pitch was poor for the game but did not necessarily ask to be deemed dangerous for the batsmen, to which Atapattu disagreed. Srinath said there was still plenty of play and the match could not be hastily called off, obvious with the repercussions involved which Srinath may not have wanted to voice.
