When Pakistan met with New Zealand in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England, skipper Daniel Vettori alleged that some Pakistan players, such as Umar Gul, indulged in ball tampering.
When Pakistan lost to New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 semi final, match fixing allegations crippled Pakistan cricket off the field until recently.
But New Zealand are not without their share of problems prior to the series. Andy Moles quit as coach of the New Zealand team just days before after some players openly stated that they felt the coach was not making any significant contributions. Daniel Vettori will now play part of captain, coach and selector in the series in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Coping with injuries, the team will now have to brace themselves in conditions that are likely to favour Pakistan more though Younis Khan, the Pakistan captain, believes that will not be the case.
Amongst the most notable absentees for Pakistan, Mohammad Asif has been barred from entering the UAE following a drug possession charge while Misbah Ul Haq has failed to find a place in the team in any format.
After the conclusion of this series, Pakistan go to New Zealand to play three Test series.
