"Thank God, the Bruiser is gone," this is the uppermost sentiment in the minds of bowlers all round the cricket world especially those who had to face him. England had been constantly at the receiving end of the powerfully built opener, who used to demolish the bowlers and fielders, not to mention fences, with impunity.

Matthew was a typical Australian cricketer when the Australian team was at its zenith. Notorious for their sledging tactics, Hayden did not spare anyone, neither the bowler nor the fielder.
The powerful front stroke was something which was watched by the spectators with awe and with dread by the opposite team. Never one to shy away from any confrontation he used to play his own game with one and only one aim, to win the match.
Batting with the broad bat he always wore a nonchalant look, chewing gum but when he sized up the bowler at the bowling end the ruthlessness showed, it surely sent down the shivers down their spines.
Unfortunately Hayden was feared and with the fear he became the ruthless batting bully not liked by many. Same is the case with many Australians who have mastered the art of sledging and combined it with their superb game. It may have made them the best team but then going away of any of the greats is seen with relief rather than regret.
Matthew Hayden is one of those.
