In the days leading to the final Test of the Ashes at the Oval, Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, has been badgered not about the Australian line up but about his own retirement.

At thirty-four, Ponting stands senior to most men in the Australian team. However, the prolific run scorer who went past Allan Border for the most number of runs by an Australian cricketer in Test cricket, is hoping that retiring into the sunset will not happen anytime soon.
Ponting is still reasonably agile, has not lost his penchant for scoring runs although it has been less evident on this tour, but there are doubts that this could be his last Ashes tour to England. While Ponting is not ruling the possibility out, he does not want to believe that it is a certain possibility.
He still has the hunger for the game and despite former cricketers such as Jeff Thompson have derided his captaincy, he insists he is enjoying leading a young pack.
