The Australian captain, aged thirty-five, overtook the West Indian's record of 11,953 runs by a single run before he was dismissed by Pakistan's Mohammad Aamer in the first Test of the Pakistan Australia Test series at Lord's.
It now means Ponting is only behind Sachin Tendulkar in the record number of Test runs. But only is a small word because Tendulkar leads the pack by 13,447 runs and still going strong. It may mean that the Australian will have to either speed up to make sure he is within touching distance of Tendulkar's record whenever Tendulkar, aged thirty-eight, retires, whenever that may be or relax in knowing he is only second amongst the best.
