Australian captain, Ricky Ponting, who has been rested for the first half of the ODI series against England, has announced that he has decided to step down from the Twenty20 captaincy with immediate effect.
The move, he states, is intended to prolong his career in the Test and ODI format. This comes after he expressed he desire to play a revenge series of the Ashes in 2013.
While Michael Clarke led Australia in the Twenty20 matches in recent times, including the rain affected two in England, Cricket Australia is in no hurry to announce Ponting's successor in the format as they do not have a Twenty20 match in their itinerary until next year.
Ponting's unsuccessful captaincy of the Australian Twenty20 team will now have ended in a first round exit at the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England, UK this June.
