From the depths of early despair, respite arrived for the hosts in the form of Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis in the second Test in Durban.

South Africa found themselves in deep trouble within the first ten overs of the second Test at Kingsmead, reduced to two down for 10 runs. But South Africa were placed in a much better position at tea, and it took the two powerhouses to resurrect the day for the hosts.
From 2 for 10, the South African captain and Kallis held the innings together and picking runs along the way. It would not have been easy on a day not easily sunny, but it took the wealth of experience to ensure that the early dismissals did not dent the hosts beyond despair.
James Anderson had Ashwell Prince caught in the slips for two while Hashim Amla became Stuart Broad's lbw victim for the same number of runs as his opening team mate, leaving South Africa in big trouble early into the match.
But thereafter it was England's grind through but the deterring presence of the two stalwarts to ensure that South Africa went into lunch and thereafter in to the tea break without no further loss and in a position of consolidation that was beginning to give the hosts a ray of hope.
Smith, despite a rather injured finger, was unbeaten on sixty-five while Kallis moved on to seventy-four as South Africa were breathing easy at 151/2 at tea on the first day.
