SA WI ODI 2: SA Survive Sammy Sixer Onslaught to Win Second ODI After Amla, Kallis Show

South Africa thought they had it sealed. But Darren Sammy had a plan of his own much to the peril of the visitors. That South Africa got out of a nail biter in the end was due to the wickets and injuries that undid the West Indies in the second ODI in Antigua.

Hashim Amla played another significant ODI innings and this time it was Jacques Kallis giving up company in good measure. With 300 runs on board, South Africa put up a strong batting performance for a second match in a row. Amla's ninety-two and Kallis' eighty-five were well complemented by Smith's partnership with Amla for eighty-nine runs for the first wicket and AB de Villiers chipping in with forty-one runs as well.

Dale Richards began well for the West Indies, taking on the attack with aplomb and scoring a half century to give the West Indies a steady start. West Indies though were struggling with injuries. Nikita Miller was injured before the innings but Ramnaresh Sarwan appeared to have done his hamstring in and required a runner. That though did not stop Dwayne Bravo from pushing forward the cause of the hosts through his own seventy-ball seventy-four.

But as the match appeared to be getting out of hand for the hosts who kept losing wickets, Morne Morkel making himself a visible nuisance when he was taking wickets while being the most expensive bowler, Darren Sammy refused to yield.

What followed in very difficult times was Sammy reducing the large gap between runs and ball remaining with a brutal assault of raining sixes to the extent that South Africa were in danger of their dropped catches making them pay.

As the match reached a climax, West Indies were within touching distance, needing thirty runs from twenty balls, and Sammy was using the long handle for his fifty-eight runs from only twenty-four balls, eight sixes star studding his effort. But West Indies were running out of wickets and it did not help their cause then that with the involvement of a runner, they lost both the final wickets to run outs, leaving Sammy stranded and South Africa delighted to have won by seventeen runs to go 2-0 up in the ODI series.
