SA WI T2 : Smith Slams Surface After Match Ends in Dull Draw

The second Test between South Africa and hosts West Indies ended in a rather dull draw with the result virtually predictable after West Indies consumed two more days to overhaul South Africa's first innings score.

Narsingh Deonarine and the West Indies captain, Chris Gayle, scored half centuries. But that effort was superseded by Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash who scored Test centuries to thwart South Africa's efforts to make inroads after setting up a first innings total of 543. Chanderpaul's 166 was the mainstay of the West Indies innings as time elapsed, the result was going to be quiet draw, unless something dramatic happened which it did not look like on this pitch.

Once West Indies were bowled out for 546, three runs more than South Africa's innings score, the visitors took the opportunity of the final day to get some more batting practice, Jacques Kallis leading the way with an unbeaten sixty-two following his thirty-fifth Test century in the first innings.

The South African captain, Graeme Smith, touched upon the issue on the pitch at Warner Park, Basseterre, St. Kitts, "This was not an exciting surface on which to play Test cricket. We were all looking for a good, even battle between bat and ball."

South Africa lead the three Test series 1-0.
