In a see saw affair, South Africa managed to get a lead, by the length of a nose, at stumps on the second day’s play of the third Test against the West Indies at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

The first two days of the Test made it apparent that victory here would be a hard fought one as only a handful of batsmen from both sides were able to get a hang of the pitch. Dale Steyn and spinner, Johan Botha, looked to have cleaned up the hosts rather nicely at 231 all out with Narsingh Deonarine once again making a useful contribution of forty-six while Dwayne Bravo showed some backbone to the affair with sixty-one runs in a tame affair for the West Indies as Botha took home the spoils with four wickets.

However, if South Africa had the bowling worked out, West Indies showed that it was be no easy day’s work for the visitors looking to win the series, already leading by 1-0. Graeme Smith, the South African captain, led the way with grit and was rewarded with seventy-one runs for the painstaking starts he had got going over the length of the tour and coming good in the Test arena. Smith’s partnership with Kallis proved integral after West Indies sliced through three wickets on

the first day.

When Kallis eventually departed for forty-three, South Africa still had a road to tread at five down for 145. And the hard work began again with the partnership between AB de Villiers and Ashwell Prince. The partnership had its scary moments, but the two simply grit their teeth and took South Africa into a slim lead. AB was eventually dismissed for seventy-three while Prince was soldiering on steadfast on a half century as South Africa ended the second day’s play on 285 for 6.
