The lives of cricketers have never been in greater threat if one went by the attacks on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore. But revelations that as back as 2002, two of Indian cricketers were in danger have thrown matters in grimmer perspective.

Harkat ul Jehadi Islami (Islamic Holy War Movement) members Tariq Mohammed and Ashfaq Ahmed have apparently confessed that a plot was decided upon in a strategy to release some of the prisoners locked in Indian jails. Based on the lines of Osama bin Laden and Taliban, the Pakistan based terror outfit allegedly working towards separation of Kashmir from India.
In the spine chilling plot which was recorded in 2002, the plan was to kidnap Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly in order to use them as collateral. That the plot was made back in 2002 is no small comfort with security becoming an unprecedented issue than ever more in the wake of the Lahore trauma and with the IPL coinciding with the Lok Sabha elections, that democracy itself has come under threat in the region was once again brought to the fore.
