Sachin Tendulkar LBWed; Should the Referee Intervene?

In one of the most consistent, shoddy displays of umpiring, Sachin Tendulkar was declared lbw wrongly three times in a row. Is there more than what meets the eye, would it not have been a big deal if it were somebody else and should the match referee not intervene?

Human errors are part of the game of cricket. Even players accept it with restraint. There are those that walk when they know they are out and there are those who believe, like Dilip Vengsarkar, that when the umpire is there to make a decision and that he could well make one wrong, why is it the batsman’s prerogative.

But Tendulkar was glaringly given out in all three one day internationals in Sri Lanka thus far and none of them should have been too tough on umpires at the international level. Yuvraj Singh was cautioned for pointing out that he was wrongly given out lbw. But Tendulkar maintained his dignity even when it was becoming plain obvious. It is sickening to even contemplate Sunil Gavaskar’s theory that umpires given players of such caliber out only to gain prominence.

But in this age of TV referral system, why can’t the match referee intervene to point out that umpires need to be careful for their actions too and not just the players as Yuvraj was hauled up? There is perhaps not a law stating yet that in the absence of the experimental TV referral system in place, the match referee should reverse a decision he sees as wrong, but when the chair umpire does it in tennis, overruling a linesman, it is important that the match referee is doing more than watching the action of the players.

Perhaps it is because it is Sachin Tendulkar that such a hullabaloo is being made. But it should apply to any batsman. After all some careers could be hanging in the balance as well. It is basic right for any batsman, and it is irrespective whether he happens to be the number one batsman in the team or the number eleven coming out to bat.
