Salman Butt is one of the three Pakistan cricketers on trial along with Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer and faces long hours of gruelling by the prosecution who are trying to nail before the jury that Butt was the man controlling the scene on the ground during the fourth Test at Lord's between Pakistan and England when the dreaded deed was captured on tape by a sting operation conducted by the News of the World tabloid.

Butt had previously stated that he was unaware of the true character of the Pakistan player agent, Mazhar Majeed, and that he was being pestered by the agent cum bookie to fix matches which he refused to do so although he did not bother to report it to the Pakistan Cricket Board authorities or the ICC as is the norm. Butt had even claimed innocence and of having no inside knowledge whatsoever of the goings on between the player agent and other Pakistan cricketers including the two fast bowlers.

Under intense grilling, Butt claimed he was suspicious of Aamer's role while still standing his ground that he had no knowledge of what was taking place under his nose. Although the prosecution was using tactics to corner Butt in the manner in which the overs in which the no balls were bowled were conducted, all of which Butt denied but did not attempt to shield the actions of his fellow bowlers or the player agent.

Although the prosecution felt strong enough to inform Butt that he had been cornered despite his vehement denials, Butt remained defiant after three days of interrogation even as the spot fixing trial is far from over.
