The progress of the South African captain, Graeme Smith, who is nursing a fractured hand has obviously been positive enough that the selectors have decided to do away with the additional batting back up in JP Duminy while retaining Ashwell Prince.

The selectors have also retained their faith in Paul Harris to lead South Africa's spin efforts, likewise giving Johan Botha the release from the plans for the first Test.

Also missing out on the first Test is fast bowler Wayne Parnell while the selectors are trusting Lonwabo Tsotsobe to do the job if required while reposing their faith in the new ball pair of Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn despite the latter's form dipping a bit of later.

The rest of the team virtually picks itself and will be put to the litmus test against the no.1 Test team in the world.

Graeme Smith (captain), AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis, Ashwell Prince, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Mark Boucher (wicket keeper), Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Ryan McLaren, Paul Harris, Hashim Amla, Alviro Petersen
