Sri Lanka Demands a Cut of the IPL

Unhappy over loss of revenue and over loss of players with the advent of the IPL, the SLC is training its guns and its eyes and presently eyeing the players’ pay cheques.

The supposed deal with the BCCI fell through and the England tour has been put indefinitely on tour. That was not bad enough, Sri Lanka are set to miss a triangular involving India and South Africa. With so much revenue that would otherwise accrue to the SLC ( Sri Lanka Cricket board), the anger over the IPL pouching their players has not died down.

Arjuna Ranatunga had already expressed his views he was unhappy over the proposal to release the players for the IPL over national duty. The return to domestic cricket by five of their ICL linked players was a SLC move that had the BCCI pulling out its hair and going to the ICC as well. But the SLC is determined not to be dominated in their policies indirectly by the BCCI through their vehicle, the IPL.

The alleged support of 40-70 million dollars for the SLC by the BCCI in lieu of the tour to England fell through in the midst of all this tussles. Now it appears that the SLC wants to control its own players rather than being controlled by the BCCI. The latest proposal comes in the form of ensuring that the SLC acts as the official agents for the players to ensure that the commission cuts going towards the individual, private agents for the Sri Lankan contracted players will now accrue directly to the SLC which feels the board has nothing to gain from releasing its players for the IPL. The SLC in effect will now become the middleman eliminating the individual parties. While they can do nothing about the present state of affairs when players have already been committed, all future contracts are expected to come under the direct control of the SLC. Storms have been brewing for sometime now and this appears like the SLC wanting to take matters into its own control, knowing the BCCI holds the ICC’s hand at the moment.

Stating that the money would be useful for developing the game when none is forthcoming from the cancelled bilateral tours, the SLC will ensure the players’ time, money and interests stay in their control!
