Sri Lankan sports ministry said that the annual general meeting and elections of the Sri Lanka board have been cancelled. The elections were scheduled on 15 July 2006. Therefore, the Interim Committee would continue to handle the cricketing affairs of Sri Lanka.
The sports minister, Jeewan Kumartunga said that the government cancelled the elections because it could affect the Triangular Series to be hosted in Sri Lanka next week. India and South Africa are the visitors to feature in the series.
The sports ministry suspected that elections in the current environment could further vitiate the already bitter atmosphere, which exists between the parties contesting for the top posts in Sri Lankan cricket.
The Chairman of the Interim Committee, Jayantha Dharmadasa will field against the and former SLC president Mohan de Silva for the SLC’s chief post.
