England captain, Andrew Strauss, stated ahead of the third Ashes Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham, that Australia did not have the aura about them. It led to Ponting trading words with Strauss on the aura theory.

Strauss stated that Australia today did not have the aura they did when they trashed England in the 2006-07 series of the Ashes tradition. He felt that with so many young, new faces, Australia did not have the same aura of being indomitable and he said that the England team felt so even before the Ashes series got underway.
However, the Australian captain retaliated that England could not be considered having an aura either that given that they rank fifth in the ICC Test rankings. Ponting said that Strauss would not have probably said that before England won at Lord’s in the second Test and certainly not when they saved the first Test at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff by the skin of their teeth.
