As Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s India experience a high on the back of a memorable victory over Australia and pushing past history against England, the beginning of 2009 spells crucial loss of momentum.

As India face their final ‘Test’ day of 2008, India would have loved nothing more than another exciting contest to keep the momentum going. That however, is not the cards. While the players would welcome a rested back, even they would admit they would rather enjoy being back in action sooner than the current break allows them.
The reason why this rare break has been accorded to them is because of the political imbroglio that has seen India calling off the tour to Pakistan scheduled for January 2009. Because of this, players will now have a period of no international cricket following today’s play till they go to New Zealand for a full tour.
Given the form that Dhoni’s men are currently enjoy, they are probably hot on the run and in the process, steam roll a few more teams on their way virtually to the top. With South Africa have pulled off the incredible at the WACA, Perth, they have shown they are not shy of the battle. But they will still have to work on the next two Tests to take back the number two spot which India will occupy if they can get through the day’s play and win the series against England.
It is shaping up great for India, even with the retirements of Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble, and Dhoni knows only too well that while rest is key, so is momentum.
