Andrew Symonds’ latest transgression was a forbidden drink ahead of Australia’s campaign in the ICC World Twenty20 in England. However, having kept his self imposed goal, Andrew Symonds insists he is not an alcoholic.

Symonds ‘ brush with alcohol have often come in the way of a flourishing cricket career. As one of the strongest cricketers in Australia and in world cricket, Symonds’ disappointments have overshadowed his achievements.
Cricket Australia sent him back from England for touching alcohol and it forced Symonds into a self imposed ban which he claims to have successfully kept en route to playing in a rugby match. However, the cricketer does not think the team will suffer because he has not been left out of the Australian squad for the Ashes (even before the Twenty20 tournament), with the management preferring the likes of Shane Watson and Andrew MacDonald.
While Symonds insists that he will not miss the glare that comes with being an international cricketer, he claims that his only problem is his being a binge drinker. Australian captain Ricky Ponting who supported the troubled star on more than one occasion has now reconciled himself as he stated that he had the team that could beat England to retain the Ashes trophy in 2009. Symonds believes that he will have more time for himself. But wonder if Australia have not made a mistake leaving out the burly all rounder whose aggression on the field need only be given direction. But that has been his problem – direction or rather the lack of it.
